What’s the same as a gas car
An EV’s body is still mostly steel and aluminum, which gets recycled the same way as any other vehicle. Tires, glass, interior components, wiring, and electronics are handled through similar recycling and resale channels. If the vehicle was in an accident, undamaged parts like wheels, suspension components, and body panels can still be resold.
The one big difference: the high-voltage battery
An EV’s main battery pack cannot simply be tossed in with general scrap metal — it contains lithium and other materials that require specialized handling to avoid fire risk and environmental contamination. A damaged or degraded lithium-ion battery pack, in particular, needs to be handled by facilities equipped for it, not treated like a standard car battery.
What actually happens to the battery
Increasingly, dead or damaged EV battery packs are sent to specialized recycling facilities that recover valuable materials like lithium, cobalt, and nickel for reuse in new batteries. Packs that still have significant charge capacity left, even if no longer suitable for a vehicle, are sometimes repurposed for stationary energy storage before eventually being recycled.
