How Scrap Car Removal Works in Whistler

Three steps, the same way we do it across the Lower Mainland.

STEP 1

Call or send us the details

Tell us the year, make and model, what’s wrong with the car, and where in Whistler it’s parked. Photos help. We give you an offer over the phone.

STEP 2

We tow it for free

We come to the car, whether it’s in a driveway, on the street, in a parkade or out in a field. Towing is free anywhere in Whistler. The driver checks the car against the photos and details you gave us. If it matches, you get the price we agreed on the phone.

STEP 3

Paid on pickup, paperwork handled

You’re paid on pickup, by cash or e-transfer, before the car leaves. We handle the ICBC transfer paperwork on the spot, so there’s no second trip for you.

One thing is different up here. Because of the distance from our core Lower Mainland routes, Whistler pickups are scheduled by appointment and not same-day, typically within a week of your call. We batch Whistler trips, so give us a call and we’ll find a time that works for you.

Whistler’s Neighbourhoods, and What Changes a Pickup in Each

Whistler’s Official Community Plan keeps development in the valley corridor between Cheakamus Crossing and Function Junction to the south and Emerald Estates to the north. The centre names on these cards come from the plan’s commercial and light industrial chapter.

Whistler Village, Village North and the Upper Village

The plan calls Whistler Village the predominant centre, with Village North beyond Village Gate Boulevard and the Upper Village across Fitzsimmons Creek. The Village Stroll is pedestrian-only, and the municipality counts more than 1,200 privately owned underground stalls in Whistler. Tell us the parkade level, the stall number and the height limit posted at the entrance.

Whistler Creek (Creekside)

Whistler Creek is the plan’s secondary core, at the south base of Whistler Mountain where the original ski base was. For a car in a lodge or condo lot, find out from the front desk or manager whether a tow truck needs to be booked in.

Function Junction and Cheakamus Crossing

Function Junction started as the industrial area and is now a general business district with employee housing mixed in. Cheakamus Crossing next door is a resident neighbourhood. In a shop yard we need the gate hours; in a housing complex, the building and stall.

Nesters, Mons and Nesters Crossing

The Mons area, in the middle of town on both sides of Highway 99, is the plan’s second industrial area: works yards, storage and heavy equipment. If the vehicle is deep in a yard, say what is parked around it.

Alpine Meadows, Rainbow, Emerald Estates and the other residential streets

White Gold, Whistler Cay, Tapley’s Farm, Nordic, Brio, Bayshores and Spring Creek each have a spot on the municipality’s neighbourhood parks page. On all of these streets the odd-side and winter even-side parking rules further down apply. In winter, clear the snow from around the car, and tell us if the driveway is steep or a snowbank blocks it.

Strata lots and private roads

The municipality says it does not govern, maintain or clear snow on strata properties, private roads, lanes or lots, and that stratas set their own limits on how many vehicles can park and where. So a car in a strata lot is a matter for the strata council or property manager first. Ask them what they need from the tow driver.

Leaving at the end of the season

If you are heading home and the car is not coming with you, sort it out before you go. We buy from the owner, with photo ID and proof of ownership, and Whistler trips are booked ahead. The street and the day lots both have time limits, covered below.

Whistler Rules Worth Knowing Before a Dead Car Sits Too Long

Each card comes from a Resort Municipality of Whistler bylaw or web page, linked so you can read the source.

A dead car on your own lot

Whistler’s Property Maintenance Bylaw No. 810, 1990 says no owner or occupier may let a property become or stay unsightly. Its meaning of unsightly includes storing all or part of a motor vehicle that is not validly registered and licensed, or that cannot move under its own power, unless it is kept in a closed structure. That means one whose contents cannot be seen from a road, a public place or another property.

A bylaw officer may give written notice to comply within 14 days, and you can dispute the notice in writing in that time. If nothing is done, the municipality may enter and remove the offending material at the expense of the person who did not comply. A cost still unpaid at December 31 is added to the property taxes.

Complaints go to Bylaw Services by phone or email. The municipality’s bylaw complaint page says anonymous ones are not acted on unless there is a possible safety issue, and that the goal is voluntary compliance before tickets.

A dead car on the street

The Parking and Traffic Bylaw No. 2177, 2018 bans parking on any highway for a continuous period of more than 72 hours. It also says no one may abandon a vehicle or leave an inoperable vehicle on a highway, or park on a highway or public place without valid insurance or valid number plates displayed.

Bylaw and parking officers may remove and impound a vehicle parked in violation. The owner cannot reclaim it until the towing and impound fees are paid. If it is not reclaimed within 30 days, the municipality may offer it at auction after mailing notice to the owner registered with ICBC.

Winter parking and the day lots

The municipality’s neighbourhood parking page says no parking on the odd-numbered side of the street at any time of year. From November 1 to March 31 there is also no parking on the even-numbered side from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday to Friday except holidays.

Its where to park page says Day Lots 1 to 5 have a 24-hour maximum stay, with no parking from 3 a.m. to 6 a.m. between November 1 and March 31. Unpaid parking tickets may also get a vehicle towed.

ICBC’s steps when you sell a vehicle

ICBC’s steps for selling a used vehicle include confirming you’re the registered owner, signing the registration, filling out the Transfer/Tax Form (APV9T), and removing your licence plates.

To cancel your insurance, ICBC says to visit your Autoplan broker with your ID, your licence plates and your owner’s certificate. You can also transfer the insurance to another vehicle. These are ICBC’s general seller and cancellation steps; we handle the transfer paperwork with you at pickup.

This is general information, not legal advice. Bylaws change, and the Resort Municipality of Whistler’s and ICBC’s own pages are the authority. Check them, or call the municipality, before you rely on any of this.

Whistler Scrap Car Questions

How much do you get for scrapping a car in Whistler?

It depends on the car: the year, make and model, what shape it is in, how much it weighs and how much demand there is for its parts. Call with those details and we’ll give you a number over the phone.

How fast is scrap car pickup in Whistler?

Whistler pickups are scheduled by appointment, typically within a week of your call. We batch trips up the corridor instead of sending a truck same-day. If you are leaving town on a set date, call well ahead of it.

Is towing free in Whistler, or is there a travel fee?

Towing is free. We never add a separate towing or travel charge. Whistler is a long run for us, so on some vehicles the distance is reflected in the offer itself, and we tell you that upfront on the phone before you agree to anything.

What is the best way to get rid of a junk car in Whistler?

Call us with the details, then have your government-issued photo ID and proof of ownership ready: the registration, a bill of sale or insurance papers. If something is missing, call first and we’ll tell you what works. Take your plates off, then cancel or transfer your insurance at an Autoplan broker.

How long can a car be parked on the street in Whistler?

No longer than 72 hours in one continuous stretch, under the Parking and Traffic Bylaw. It also has to show valid plates and insurance. On neighbourhood streets the odd-numbered side is off limits all year.

Who do I call about an abandoned vehicle in Whistler?

Bylaw Services at the Resort Municipality of Whistler, at 604-935-8280 or bylawservices@whistler.ca. If it is on a strata property, the municipality sends you to the strata council or property manager instead. We can’t take a vehicle that isn’t yours: we buy from the owner, with ID and proof of ownership.
