How Scrap Car Removal Works in Maple Ridge

Three steps, the same way we do it across the Lower Mainland.

STEP 1

Call or send us the details

Tell us the year, make and model, what’s wrong with the car, and where in Maple Ridge it’s parked. Photos help. We give you an offer over the phone.

STEP 2

We tow it for free

We come to the car, whether it’s in a driveway, on the street, in a parkade or out in a field. Towing is free anywhere in Maple Ridge. The driver checks the car against the photos and details you gave us. If it matches, you get the price we agreed on the phone.

STEP 3

Paid on pickup, paperwork handled

You’re paid on pickup, by cash or e-transfer, before the car leaves. We handle the ICBC transfer paperwork on the spot, so there’s no second trip for you.

Maple Ridge’s Neighbourhoods, and What Changes a Pickup in Each

The City of Maple Ridge says it is made up of several notable neighbourhoods and historical areas, many of them well over 100 years old. Its Our Neighbourhoods page names ten: Albion/Kanaka, Port Hammond, Port Haney, Ruskin, Silver Valley, Thornhill, Town Centre, Webster’s Corners, Whonnock and Yennadon. We pick up in all ten.

Town Centre and Port Haney

The City describes its downtown as walkable, with shops, services and the ACT Arts Centre. The Town Centre Area Plan aims for a denser, mixed-use core around the Haney Transit Exchange and Port Haney Station, so a dead car here is often in an apartment or condo parkade. Port Haney is the old riverfront, once the steamboat landing and the CPR station.

Port Hammond

The City’s Hammond page places this neighbourhood in the southwest corner of Maple Ridge, with Pitt Meadows and the Katzie First Nation to the west and the Fraser River to the south. It has early 1900s houses, a historic commercial area and the Maple Meadows Business Park. For a vehicle at a business, give us the unit number.

Albion and Kanaka

Home to the Albion Fairgrounds and Planet Ice. The Albion Area Plan balances new residential development with protecting environmentally sensitive areas. A newer street can be tight for a tow truck, so mention how much room there is in front of the car.

Silver Valley

North of the Alouette River. The City calls Silver Valley a growing residential area with forested hillsides, popular with equestrians and a gateway to Golden Ears Provincial Park. Hillside means slopes. Tell us if the driveway is steep and which way the car is facing.

Yennadon and Thornhill

The City describes Yennadon as an active agricultural production area and home to Maple Ridge Park. It calls Thornhill heavily forested and mainly residential, with several farms and nurseries. Expect long driveways under trees. If brush has grown up around a car that has sat for years, mention it.

Webster’s Corners

Near the border of Maple Ridge and Mission, just off Dewdney Trunk Road. Give us the nearest cross street along with the address, and say if the car is out of sight of the road.

Whonnock and Ruskin

The east end of the city. Whonnock is known for Whonnock Lake Park. Ruskin sits on the border with Mission, near where the Stave River meets the Fraser, and the City notes its long history of sawmills.

Acreages, farms and gravel driveways

From Yennadon east to Ruskin, plenty of properties are measured in acres. An old truck or car might be beside a shop, in a paddock or down a gravel track. Let us know whether there is a gate, whether the tires hold air and what the ground is like after rain.

Condo parkades and townhouse complexes

Around the Town Centre, the car is more likely in an underground stall than on a driveway. We need the stall number, the height posted at the parkade entrance, and a fob or code to get in. Some buildings want notice before a tow truck arrives, so check with your strata or building manager first.

Maple Ridge Rules Worth Knowing Before a Dead Car Sits Too Long

Each card below comes from a City of Maple Ridge bylaw or web page, and links to it.

A wrecked or unlicensed car on your own property

In Maple Ridge this sits in the Maple Ridge Zoning Bylaw No. 7600-2019. It prohibits wrecking vehicles, and parking or storing wrecked vehicles, in every zone except the M-5 zone. Wrecked has a broad meaning there: a vehicle that is wrecked or disabled so it can’t run under its own power, the parts of one, and a vehicle that looks wrecked and isn’t displaying a current licence, even if it could still be driven.

A lot zoned for residential use can’t be used to park or store more than one unlicensed vehicle, and a lot zoned for agricultural use can’t hold more than two. The exception is concealed parking, which the bylaw defines as parking wholly within a building or structure.

If the yard gets untidy, or a neighbour complains

The Untidy and Unsightly Premises Bylaw No. 6533-2007 says an owner or occupier must not let a property become or remain untidy or unsightly. Its description of unsightly includes derelict vehicles and vehicle parts. An order to clean up carries a deadline of up to 30 days, or as little as 7 days if the officer believes the problem is a nuisance. After that the City can do the work at the owner’s or occupier’s expense and recover the cost the way it collects property taxes.

The City’s Bylaw Enforcement page lists wrecked vehicles and unlicensed vehicles among its zoning complaints. It says anonymous complaints are not accepted, that the complainant’s details are kept confidential, and that officers first work with the person responsible to fix the problem voluntarily.

A dead car on the street

The City’s parking rules page says no vehicle may stay parked in the same spot on a public street for more than 72 hours. The Maple Ridge Highway and Traffic Bylaw No. 6704-2009 also bars parking on a street or on municipal property without valid insurance and valid number plates displayed.

Under that bylaw, an unattended vehicle that appears to be abandoned on a street can be removed and impounded. The registered owner pays the removal and impound costs. A vehicle that isn’t claimed within one month of being seized can be sold at public auction.

If the City has it towed

The same parking page says a vehicle towed from a city street, a park or a city-owned parking lot may be found at Maple Ridge Towing, 23283 McKay Avenue. For a tow from a commercial lot or a garage, the City says to check the tow-away sign on site for the company’s name.

ICBC’s steps when you sell a vehicle

ICBC’s steps for selling a used vehicle include confirming you’re the registered owner, signing the registration, filling out the Transfer/Tax Form (APV9T), and removing your licence plates.

To cancel your insurance, ICBC says to visit your Autoplan broker with your ID, your licence plates and your owner’s certificate. You can also transfer the insurance to another vehicle. These are ICBC’s general seller and cancellation steps; we handle the transfer paperwork with you at pickup.

This is general information, not legal advice. Bylaws change, and the City of Maple Ridge’s and ICBC’s own pages are the authority. Check them, or call the City, before you rely on any of this.

Maple Ridge Scrap Car Questions

How much do you get for scrapping a car in Maple Ridge?

No one figure fits every car. Our offer comes down to how heavy the vehicle is, its year, make and model, and whether it has parts worth saving. Phone us with those details. You’ll get an offer on the call, and the driver pays that amount if the car matches what you told us.

What is the best way to get rid of a junk car in Maple Ridge?

For a car that no longer runs, the least work is a scrap car buyer who comes to you, tows for free and pays at pickup. You’ll want government-issued photo ID plus proof that the car is yours: the registration, a bill of sale or insurance papers all count. If you’re missing one of those, call us before booking.

What are the bylaws in Maple Ridge for a car that doesn’t run?

Three City bylaws matter most. The Zoning Bylaw prohibits storing a wrecked vehicle in almost every zone, and allows no more than one unlicensed vehicle on a residential lot unless it is inside a building. The Untidy and Unsightly Premises Bylaw counts derelict vehicles and vehicle parts as unsightly. The Highway and Traffic Bylaw covers cars left on the street.

How long before a vehicle is considered abandoned in Maple Ridge?

The number we could confirm is 72 hours. The City says no vehicle may remain parked in the same location on a public street for longer than that. Its Highway and Traffic Bylaw also lets an unattended vehicle that appears to be abandoned be impounded.

Do you pick up in Silver Valley, Albion and Webster’s Corners?

Yes. Every Maple Ridge neighbourhood is in our standard service area, and there’s no extra travel fee. Same-day pickup is often possible. If the car is on an acreage or a farm, describe the driveway and the ground around the car when you call.
