Do Electric Cars Get Scrapped Differently? What Happens to a Dead EV Battery

As more EVs reach the end of their road life across Metro Vancouver, a common question is coming up more often: does an electric car get scrapped the same way as a gas car, or is it a completely different process? The short answer is that most of it is similar — with one major exception that requires special handling.

What’s the same as a gas car

An EV’s body is still mostly steel and aluminum, which gets recycled the same way as any other vehicle. Tires, glass, interior components, wiring, and electronics are handled through similar recycling and resale channels. If the vehicle was in an accident, undamaged parts like wheels, suspension components, and body panels can still be resold.

The one big difference: the high-voltage battery

An EV’s main battery pack cannot simply be tossed in with general scrap metal — it contains lithium and other materials that require specialized handling to avoid fire risk and environmental contamination. A damaged or degraded lithium-ion battery pack, in particular, needs to be handled by facilities equipped for it, not treated like a standard car battery.

What actually happens to the battery

Increasingly, dead or damaged EV battery packs are sent to specialized recycling facilities that recover valuable materials like lithium, cobalt, and nickel for reuse in new batteries. Packs that still have significant charge capacity left, even if no longer suitable for a vehicle, are sometimes repurposed for stationary energy storage before eventually being recycled.

Does this affect what your EV is worth?

Not negatively — if anything, EVs often retain solid value even in accident or end-of-life condition because of battery material value and strong demand for used EV components. It just means the buyer needs to know how to handle the battery correctly.

A buyer that knows how to handle EVs properly

If you’ve got an electric vehicle that’s reached the end of the road, Vancouver Scrap Car handles EV battery packs and components properly and can give you a fair quote based on your vehicle’s actual condition and materials — with free towing included.

Moving or Leaving the Country? Get Rid of Your Car Fast

If you’re moving away from Vancouver — or leaving the country altogether — your car can turn into one of the most stressful items on your to-do list. Facebook Marketplace buyers often want to test drive it, negotiate, and then pick it up “whenever works,” but you don’t have that luxury. You need your car right up until the day you leave, and BC law says a vehicle needs valid insurance and a registered owner responsible for it the entire time it’s on the road or even parked on the street.

The catch with private sales when you’re on a deadline

Selling privately usually means listing the car, fielding messages, scheduling viewings, and waiting for a buyer who’s actually ready to commit — a process that can easily take two or three weeks. If your flight is booked, you don’t have three weeks of flexibility. And until the car is legally transferred to a new owner, you’re still on the hook for ICBC insurance, parking tickets, and liability if anything happens to it.

Why a same-day scrap or cash-for-car sale solves this specific problem

A scrap car buyer isn’t trying to negotiate over Marketplace DMs for two weeks — the whole process is built to happen fast. You get a quote based on your car’s year, make, model, and condition, and if you accept, the vehicle can be picked up within a day or two, sometimes the same day. That means you can keep driving it right up until close to your departure date and still walk away with cash before you leave, instead of leaving a half-sold car with a friend or relative to “deal with later.”

What to have ready

To transfer a vehicle out of your name in BC, you’ll generally need your vehicle registration, a piece of ID, and to complete a transfer/release of liability so ICBC and the province know it’s no longer yours. A reputable buyer will walk you through this on pickup day so there’s no loose end still tied to your name after you’ve left the country.

Moving the other way — bringing a car into BC from another province — works differently: before you can even put it on the road here, it generally has to pass a mandatory inspection. See our guide on what BC’s out-of-province vehicle inspection covers, and what happens if an older car doesn’t pass.

Don’t leave it as someone else’s problem

We’ve heard from more than one person who left a car with a family member “to sell later” — only for it to sit for months, racking up questions about who’s responsible for it. If you’re leaving, it’s worth getting it handled before you go. Vancouver Scrap Car offers free towing and same-day pickup across the Lower Mainland, so you can close this out cleanly and focus on the move itself.

Gas Prices vs. Car Payments: What’s Actually Cheaper in 2026?

Every time gas prices climb in Metro Vancouver, the same debate resurfaces: is it cheaper to keep nursing an old, thirsty car along, or to take on a car payment for something newer and more efficient? The honest answer depends on numbers a lot of people never actually sit down and calculate.

What an old, inefficient car really costs you at the pump

A car averaging 12 L/100km driven 15,000 km a year burns roughly 1,800 litres of fuel annually. At Vancouver-area prices, that adds up fast — often $2,500 to $3,000 a year on gas alone, before a single repair. A more efficient newer vehicle at 7-8 L/100km can cut that fuel bill by close to half.

What a car payment actually costs you

A used, more efficient vehicle financed over 5-6 years might run $350-500/month depending on the price and rate. That’s a real, fixed cost — but it usually comes with lower maintenance costs, fewer surprise repairs, and often lower insurance if you’re moving away from a high-risk older vehicle.

The real comparison

The math isn’t just fuel versus payment — it’s total cost of ownership. Add up what your current car costs you per year in gas, repairs, and any insurance surcharges for its age or condition, then compare that to a payment plus lower fuel and maintenance costs on something newer. For a lot of owners with an aging vehicle that needs frequent repairs, the numbers land closer than they expect, and sometimes the newer car wins outright once repairs are factored in honestly.

Free up the cash to make the switch

If the math points toward upgrading, your current vehicle can help fund the move — even if it’s old, high-mileage, or needs work. Vancouver Scrap Car offers free towing and pays cash on the spot, so you’re not waiting weeks for a private sale to put that value toward your next vehicle.

Why Smart Dealerships Don’t Waste Time Reselling End-of-Life Trade-Ins

Every trade-in a dealership takes has to go somewhere. The good ones go to the used lot. But a percentage of trade-ins every month are genuinely at the end of their useful life — high mileage, mechanical issues, body damage — and the smartest dealers know exactly what to do with those: move them fast, not try to squeeze out a small resale margin.

The hidden cost of reconditioning a marginal trade-in

Getting a rough trade-in sale-ready means detailing, mechanical inspection, repairs, safety certification, and lot space — all before it’s even listed. For a trade-in with real problems, reconditioning costs can eat most or all of the resale margin, and that’s before factoring in the weeks or months it sits on the lot not turning over, tying up floor plan financing the whole time.

Lot space and time are the real cost

Every day a low-margin vehicle sits on a dealership’s lot is a day that space isn’t being used by a car that will actually sell quickly and profitably. Sales staff time spent trying to move a rough trade-in is time not spent on inventory that converts faster. For a business, that opportunity cost often matters more than the small profit a marginal vehicle might eventually bring in.

The wholesale-to-scrap math

Selling a genuinely end-of-life trade-in directly to a scrap or salvage buyer converts it to cash almost immediately — no reconditioning spend, no lot time, no sales commission, no financing carry cost. When you run the numbers on time and reconditioning against a marginal resale price, wholesaling out the worst trade-ins often nets a similar or better return with a fraction of the hassle and risk.

A standing option for your worst trade-ins

If your service department or sales team is routinely flagging trade-ins that aren’t worth reconditioning, it’s worth having a fast, no-hassle buyer on call. Vancouver Scrap Car works with dealerships and independent lots across the Lower Mainland to take end-of-life trade-ins off your hands quickly, with free towing and same-day payment, so your lot space and staff time stay focused on inventory that actually sells.

ICBC Write-Off & Flood-Damaged Car Removal in Richmond: What Happens Next

ICBC Write-Off & Flood-Damaged Car Removal in Richmond: What Happens Next

If ICBC has declared your car a total loss, or it’s been sitting with flood damage after one of Richmond’s heavier rain seasons, you’re probably wondering what actually happens now — and whether you’re even allowed to sell or scrap it yourself. Here’s how it generally works.

A Write-Off Doesn’t Mean the Car Has No Value

“Total loss” is an insurance term, not a scrap yard term. It just means ICBC decided the cost to repair the vehicle exceeds what they’re willing to pay out. The car itself can still have real scrap and parts value, and we’re happy to buy it as-is once ownership is confirmed.

What Usually Happens Between the Insurance Claim and the Scrap Yard

Every claim is a little different, but there are a few common steps in Richmond:

  • ICBC assesses the vehicle and issues a total loss settlement to the owner or lienholder
  • The vehicle’s registration status gets updated to reflect the write-off, sometimes with a salvage or non-repairable brand attached
  • Ownership needs to be confirmed before any scrap company can legally take the vehicle — if ICBC has taken possession as part of the settlement, they (not you) may be the ones who need to arrange removal
  • Flood-damaged vehicles sometimes carry a “flood” or “salvage” branding on the registration once assessed

Because the exact process depends on your specific claim and whether ICBC has already taken ownership, it’s worth checking your settlement paperwork or asking your adjuster directly whether you still hold title to the vehicle.

What We Need From You

To pick up a write-off or flood vehicle, we need proof that you’re the legal owner (or authorized to sell on the owner’s behalf) — typically your registration or ICBC paperwork showing the settlement, plus photo ID. If ICBC has already taken title, we’ll need to confirm with you who the current legal owner is before we can make an offer or schedule a pickup.

Flood Damage Specifically

Flood-damaged cars are a bit of a special case. Electrical systems, airbags, and interior components are often affected in ways that aren’t obvious from the outside, which is part of why insurers write them off rather than repair them. That doesn’t change much for us on the scrap side — we’re buying for parts and material value either way — but it’s worth mentioning if you’re getting quotes elsewhere, since some buyers price flood vehicles differently than a standard mechanical write-off.

Getting It Off Your Property

Whether the car is sitting in your driveway, a Richmond parking pad, or a strata lot, we handle the towing as part of the pickup — no need to arrange your own tow truck. We just need clear access and the ownership paperwork sorted out beforehand so the pickup isn’t delayed.

We Buy Junk Cars in Burnaby With No Insurance or Plates

We Buy Junk Cars in Burnaby With No Insurance or Plates

Let your insurance lapse? Already handed your plates back to ICBC? None of that stops you from selling a junk car in Burnaby. It’s actually one of the most common situations we run into, so here’s exactly how it works.

Lapsed Insurance Doesn’t Block a Sale

A lot of people assume a car needs to be currently insured before anyone will buy it. That’s not the case for scrap and salvage sales — we’re not test-driving the thing or putting it back on the road, so active insurance isn’t something we need to see. If your policy expired months ago while the car sat in the driveway, that’s completely normal and won’t hold up the sale.

What Matters Instead

What we actually need is proof that you’re the legal owner of the vehicle. In BC that’s typically your vehicle registration (even an expired one works fine) along with a piece of photo ID that matches the name on it. If the registration is missing entirely, call us before we come out — we’ll tell you what else we can accept as proof of ownership.

What If the Plates Were Already Returned or Never Put Back On?

Returned plates aren’t a problem either. Plates relate to driving the vehicle on the road, not to selling it for scrap. Whether your plates are sitting in a drawer, already surrendered to ICBC, or the car never had them reinstalled after a repair, we can still pick the vehicle up and pay you for it.

If You’re Not Sure What Documents You Have

Don’t let uncertainty about paperwork stop you from calling. A lot of Burnaby customers aren’t sure exactly what they have on hand until we talk it through with them — a registration slip, a bill of sale from when they bought the car, even old ICBC renewal mail can help confirm ownership. We’ll tell you plainly if something’s missing and what we can do about it.

The Pickup Itself

Once ownership is sorted out, the rest is simple. We come to you anywhere in Burnaby, tow the vehicle away at no cost, and pay you on the spot. No need to get the car running, cleaned up, or anywhere near driveable — we take vehicles exactly as they sit.

Next Step

If you’ve got a junk car in Burnaby with expired insurance, missing plates, or both, give us a call at (236) 889-3494 for a free quote. We’ll tell you exactly what we need before we show up. How Much Does It Cost to Scrap a Truck or Farm Vehicle in Abbotsford/Chilliwack? Travel Fees Explained

How Much Does It Cost to Scrap a Truck or Farm Vehicle in Abbotsford/Chilliwack? Travel Fees Explained

Short answer: it usually doesn’t cost you anything — we pay you for the vehicle, not the other way around. But pricing on trucks and farm equipment in Abbotsford and Chilliwack works a little differently than a regular car, so here’s how it actually breaks down.

Why Trucks and Farm Vehicles Are Priced Differently

Trucks, especially larger pickups and commercial models, generally carry more scrap metal weight than a sedan, which can mean a better payout. Farm vehicles and equipment are more variable — a tractor or combine has valuable components but can also be harder to access, load, and transport depending on where it’s parked on the property. We quote each one based on its size, condition, and location rather than a flat rate.

What “Travel Fees” Actually Means

Our core service area covers Metro Vancouver, and Abbotsford and Chilliwack sit further out along the Fraser Valley. For most vehicles in these areas, we’re able to fold the extra driving distance into the offer rather than charging a separate fee — it just gets factored into the number we quote you. In some cases, particularly a low-value vehicle combined with a longer or harder-to-reach pickup, that travel time can affect the final offer. We’ll always tell you upfront if that’s a factor before you agree to anything.

What Affects Your Specific Quote

  • The vehicle’s weight and metal content (bigger trucks generally score higher)
  • Whether it runs and rolls, or needs to be winched/towed from a field or barn
  • How accessible the location is — a paved driveway versus a muddy back lot make a real difference for our equipment
  • Current scrap metal market pricing, which fluctuates over time

Get the Most Accurate Number

Because so much depends on the specific vehicle and its exact location, the fastest way to get a real number is a quick call rather than guessing from a general price list. Tell us the make, model, condition, and where it’s parked, and we’ll give you a straight quote — including whether travel distance factors in at all.

Abandoned Vehicle on Your Rural Property in Chilliwack or Abbotsford: Can You Just Scrap It?

Abandoned Vehicle on Your Rural Property in Chilliwack or Abbotsford: Can You Just Scrap It?

Finding an old vehicle abandoned on your land in Chilliwack or Abbotsford is more common than you’d think in the Fraser Valley — a previous owner left it behind, a tenant moved out without it, or it’s simply been sitting there so long nobody remembers whose it is. Here’s generally how this works, though every situation is a little different.

Ownership Still Matters, Even If the Vehicle Was Abandoned

Just because a vehicle is sitting on your property doesn’t automatically make it yours to sell. In BC, an abandoned vehicle typically still belongs to whoever last owned it (or their lienholder) until that’s formally sorted out. We’re not able to give legal advice on your specific situation, but generally the path forward involves identifying the registered owner through ICBC or documenting that the vehicle was truly abandoned, sometimes with help from your local municipality or the RCMP’s non-emergency line.

Steps That Are Usually Involved

  • Check the VIN (often on the dashboard or door frame) and see if ICBC can identify a registered owner
  • Contact the City of Chilliwack or City/District dealing with Abbotsford bylaw services, since abandoned vehicles on private property sometimes fall under local bylaws with their own process
  • Keep records of how long the vehicle has been there and any attempts made to locate the owner
  • Once ownership is confirmed or the legal abandonment process is complete, you’re generally clear to sell or scrap it

Because rules and timelines can vary and this isn’t something we’re positioned to advise on legally, it’s worth a quick call to your municipality or ICBC to confirm the right process for your specific case before moving forward.

How We Can Help Once Ownership Is Sorted

Once you’ve confirmed you’re clear to sell or dispose of the vehicle, we make that last step easy. We’ll come out to your Chilliwack or Abbotsford property, take the vehicle exactly as it sits — overgrown, non-running, missing parts, none of that matters — and pay you for it on the spot. No need to get it running or move it yourself.

Not Sure Where You Stand?

If you’re unsure whether a vehicle on your property counts as legally abandoned or what paperwork you’d need, give us a call anyway. We can’t offer legal advice, but we can share what we typically see from other Fraser Valley property owners in similar situations and point you toward the right local resource to confirm your specific case.

Next Step

Ready to have an abandoned vehicle removed from your Chilliwack or Abbotsford property? Call us at (236) 889-3494 once you’ve confirmed you’re able to sell it. Check out our Chilliwack page or our Abbotsford page, our FAQ, or reach out through our contact page.

Selling a Junk Car Without Keys or Title in the Fraser Valley: Is It Possible?

Selling a Junk Car Without Keys or Title in the Fraser Valley: Is It Possible?

Lost the keys years ago? Never had the title paperwork, or misplaced it long before you thought about selling? It’s a more common situation than you’d expect for Fraser Valley car owners, and in most cases it doesn’t have to stop you from selling your junk car.

Missing Keys Generally Isn’t a Dealbreaker

We’re not buying the car to drive it away — it gets loaded and towed regardless of whether it runs. That means a missing key set is rarely an issue on our end. If the vehicle is in gear or the steering is locked, our tow operator can usually work around that during pickup.

What About a Missing Title?

In BC, what most people call the “title” is really your vehicle registration through ICBC. If you’ve lost it, that’s fixable — ICBC can usually confirm your ownership on file, or issue a duplicate registration, as long as you can show valid photo ID matching the name associated with the vehicle. We can often still move forward with a sale using other proof of ownership too, like a bill of sale from when you originally bought the car.

If the Car Was Inherited or the Owner Has Passed Away

This situation comes up more than people expect. If you’re selling a vehicle that belonged to a family member, we’ll need documentation showing you’re legally authorized to sell it — this can vary depending on your circumstances, so it’s worth a quick call to ICBC or a notary if you’re not sure what applies to you.

The Easiest Way to Sort This Out

Rather than guessing what paperwork you have or need, give us a call and describe your situation. We deal with missing keys, missing registrations, and inherited vehicles regularly across the Fraser Valley, and we’ll tell you plainly what we can work with and what you might need to track down first.

Next Step

If you’ve got a junk car in the Fraser Valley without keys, without the registration, or both, call us at (236) 889-3494 for a free quote. We’ll walk through what’s needed before we ever show up for pickup. Have a look at our FAQ for other common questions, or reach out through our contact page.

Scrapping a Car From a Strata, Condo, or Apartment in Burnaby

If you live in a strata, condo, or apartment building in Burnaby — and a lot of people do, since Burnaby has one of the highest concentrations of multi-family housing in the Lower Mainland — scrapping a dead car isn’t quite as simple as backing a tow truck up your own driveway. The car itself doesn’t care where it’s parked, but getting a tow truck safely in and out of shared property takes a bit more planning. Here’s how to make it painless.

Check your strata bylaws and visitor parking rules first

Most stratas have rules about who can access the parkade or visitor stalls, and some require advance notice for any vehicle removal or delivery. Before you book a pickup, it’s worth a quick look at your strata’s bylaws (or a message to your property manager) to confirm whether a tow truck needs to be pre-approved, and whether there’s a specific gate code, fob, or access window you’ll need to arrange. This is especially true for underground parkades, where clearance height and turning radius can also be a factor for larger tow trucks.

Tell your property manager or strata council before you book

Even where it isn’t strictly required, giving your property manager or council a heads-up is good practice. A dead car sitting in a stall for weeks is often what triggers a bylaw complaint in the first place, so letting them know it’s being removed — and roughly when — tends to smooth things over. If the vehicle is in a visitor stall rather than your own assigned parking, mention that too, since some buildings have strict rules about how long a non-resident vehicle (including a tow truck) can be on site.

Where we typically pick up from in Burnaby buildings

  • Assigned underground or surface parking stalls
  • Visitor parking areas (with building permission)
  • Loading bays, where the building has one and allows it
  • Street parking directly in front of the building, when on-site access isn’t possible

If you’re not sure which option applies to your building, just tell us the address and stall type when you call — we deal with Burnaby strata pickups regularly and can usually tell you what to expect before we even show up.

Timing matters more in shared buildings

Underground parkades and shared driveways tend to get busiest during commuter hours (early morning and late afternoon). Booking a pickup for the middle of the day, when there’s less traffic in and out, generally makes for a smoother removal with less risk of blocking other residents. If your building has a specific loading window or restricts non-resident vehicle access to certain hours, let us know when you book and we’ll work around it.

Paperwork is the same as any other car

Living in a strata doesn’t change what we need from you to complete the sale — the requirements are identical to a car parked in a private driveway: proof of ownership, valid ID, and the keys if you have them. For the full rundown of documents to have ready, see our guide to the paperwork needed to scrap a car in BC. And if the vehicle is currently plated and insured, don’t forget the ICBC side of things — we cover that in our guide on notifying ICBC when you scrap a car.

Scrap car removal from Burnaby stratas and condos

We tow from strata properties, condo buildings, and apartments all over Burnaby, and we’re used to coordinating with property managers and concierge desks when needed. Same-day pickup is usually available, payment is on the spot, and there’s no cost to you for the tow. Visit our Burnaby scrap car removal page for more on local pickup, or just give us a call with your building’s address and we’ll take it from there.

Can You Scrap a JDM Import or Right-Hand-Drive Car in Richmond?

If your car came off a boat instead of a Canadian factory line, scrapping it works the same way as any other vehicle. Right-hand-drive (RHD) and JDM (Japanese Domestic Market) imports are common in Richmond specifically — the city has one of the Lower Mainland’s biggest clusters of JDM import dealers, specialty mechanics, and enthusiast shops, so we get this question a lot from Richmond sellers. The short answer: yes, we buy JDM and right-hand-drive cars, vans, and Kei trucks exactly like we buy any other end-of-life vehicle. Here’s what actually matters when you’re ready to scrap one.

The 15-year import rule doesn’t affect scrapping

Most of the confusion around JDM cars comes from Canada’s import rule, not anything to do with scrapping them. Under federal rules, a vehicle becomes eligible to import into Canada once it reaches 15 years from its month and year of manufacture — not the model year, the actual build date. That rule governs whether a car was allowed into the country in the first place. It has nothing to do with whether you can scrap it once it’s here. Once a JDM import has cleared that process (or if you’re not sure it ever fully did), our job is just to buy the vehicle and recycle it responsibly — we’re not re-litigating its import history.

What paperwork you need is the same as any car

Whether your import is fully plated and insured through ICBC, sitting on old out-of-province registration, or still on the export paperwork from Japan because it never got put on the road here, we can usually still make a deal work. Ideally you’ll have:

  • Proof you own the vehicle — a BC Certificate of Registration/Insurance if it’s plated, or the import/export paperwork and bill of sale if it isn’t
  • Government-issued photo ID matching the name on the ownership documents
  • The keys, if you still have them (not a dealbreaker if you don’t)

If your car was never registered with ICBC at all — some JDM imports sit in a garage for years as a project that never got finished — that’s fine too. We’ll walk you through exactly what we need over the phone before the tow truck shows up. For the general rundown on documents we ask for, see our full paperwork guide.

Does right-hand-drive change the payout?

It depends on the vehicle, same as with any car. What changes the offer is condition, weight, and whether there’s parts demand — not which side the steering wheel is on. Popular JDM models (certain Skylines, Silvias, Kei trucks, and vans) sometimes have real demand for used parts, which can work in your favour. A rusted-out shell with no resale-worthy parts is priced closer to scrap metal value regardless of badge or drivetrain layout. Either way, we give you a real number over the phone before anything is booked — see our guide on how scrap car prices actually work in BC for the full breakdown.

Do you need to tell ICBC?

If the vehicle is currently plated and insured, yes — the same ICBC deregistration step applies to a JDM import as it does to a Honda Civic. We cover exactly how that works, and what happens if you skip it, in our guide on notifying ICBC when you scrap a car. If the car was never registered in BC in the first place, there’s nothing to deregister — we’ll confirm ownership through the import paperwork instead.

Can You Scrap a Financed or Leased Car in BC?

Not every car on the road is fully paid off, and that changes what you’re actually allowed to do with it. If your car is financed, you own it outright — a lender just holds a registered lien against the title until the loan is paid off. If your car is leased, you never owned it in the first place. That one difference decides whether you can call a scrap buyer today or whether you need to sort something out with a finance or leasing company first — and getting it wrong can mean a delay while a title or lease question gets sorted out before any money changes hands.

Financed cars: you own it, but the lien has to come off first

With a financed vehicle, you’re the registered owner in ICBC’s system, but the lender has registered a lien against the car — usually through the Personal Property Registry — as security for the loan. Most scrap and used-car buyers, us included, can’t legally buy a vehicle with an active lien still attached, because the lender technically has a claim on it until the loan is settled. This isn’t unique to scrap buyers; a private buyer or dealership would run into the exact same problem, since a lien search is a standard part of any used-vehicle sale in BC. The fix is usually straightforward: call your lender, ask for a payout figure, and have the lien released once it’s paid. We’ve covered the full process — including what to do if the payout is more than the car is worth — in our guide on paying off liens before scrapping a financed car.

If you’ve fallen behind on payments rather than planning ahead, the lender can repossess the vehicle outright before any of this comes up. Our guide on what happens when your car gets repossessed in BC covers the notice period, your right to catch up, and what you might still owe.

Leased cars: the leasing company is the registered owner, not you

Leasing works differently. On a BC vehicle registration for a leased car, the leasing company (the lessor) is listed as the registered owner, and you’re listed as the lessee. Legally, you’re driving someone else’s vehicle under a contract — you were never on title, so you have nothing to sign over to a scrap buyer, a wrecker, or anyone else, no matter how the car is running. This catches people off guard, because day to day a leased car feels exactly like one you own.

What to do if a leased car isn’t worth repairing anymore

If a leased vehicle develops a serious mechanical problem — the kind covered in our posts on blown head gaskets or failing transmissions — you have two realistic paths. The first is a lease buyout: your leasing company will quote a payout figure (usually based on the vehicle’s residual value in the lease contract), and once you pay that out, the car is legally yours. At that point it’s no different from any other owned vehicle, and you’re free to get a scrap quote and sell it the normal way. The second path is returning the car under the terms of your lease and dealing with any early-termination costs directly with the leasing company — they, not you, decide what happens to the vehicle after that.

What happens if a leased car is written off in an accident

If a leased vehicle is damaged badly enough that ICBC or your insurer declares it a total loss, the settlement is negotiated primarily with the registered owner — the leasing company — not with you as the lessee. In practice, the payout is applied against what you still owe on the lease, and any remaining shortfall or surplus is handled between you, the insurer, and the leasing company under your lease agreement. You generally aren’t in a position to take the wreck to a scrap buyer yourself, since you were never the one who owned it.

Quick decision guide

  • Financed, loan almost paid off: call your lender for a lien payout figure and release, then get a same-day number from our price estimator.
  • Financed, significant balance remaining: talk to your lender before contacting a buyer — see our full breakdown on liens and scrapping.
  • Leased, still under contract, mechanical problems: call your leasing company about an early buyout or return before doing anything else — you can’t scrap a car you don’t legally own.
  • Leased, written off in an accident: your insurer and the leasing company handle the total-loss settlement between them; a scrap buyer isn’t part of that process.
