Scrapping a Motorcycle in BC: What It’s Worth and How the Process Works

Most people assume a scrap car company only wants, well, cars. Vancouver Scrap Car also buys motorcycles — running or not, crashed or simply parked for years — and the process looks a lot like scrapping a car, with a few real differences worth knowing before you call.

Yes, We Buy Motorcycles Too

Whether it’s a sport bike that came off worse in a low-speed spill, a cruiser that’s been sitting under a tarp since the battery died, or a dirt bike nobody in the family rides anymore, it’s worth a call. Vehicle type doesn’t disqualify you from a quote — we buy cars, trucks, vans, SUVs, and motorcycles, and the quote process is the same five-minute phone call either way: tell us the year, make, model, and condition, and we’ll give you a number.

What Actually Determines a Motorcycle’s Scrap Value

Motorcycles don’t scrap quite like cars do, and the value breakdown is a little different:

  • Weight matters less than it does for cars. A motorcycle weighs a fraction of what a car does, so pure scrap-metal weight alone usually isn’t where the value comes from.
  • Parts demand drives the price. A popular sport bike or a commonly-ridden commuter model with sellable fairings, wheels, and an intact engine can be worth more than an obscure or very old model in similar condition, simply because there’s a used-parts market for it.
  • Running condition still counts. A bike that starts and rides is worth more than one that doesn’t, but non-running bikes are absolutely still worth calling about — a dead battery or a seized engine doesn’t mean the frame, bodywork, and drivetrain aren’t sellable.
  • Damage location matters more than damage severity. A bike that’s been dropped and has cosmetic scrapes is a different conversation than one with a bent frame, but both are still worth a quote — we price based on the actual vehicle, not a guess over the phone.

Written Off by ICBC After an Accident? You Still Have Options

If your motorcycle was in a collision and ICBC declared it a total loss, the insurance settlement isn’t the only way to get value out of it — the same logic that applies to a totaled car still being worth real cash applies to bikes. A “total loss” rating from an insurer is about repair cost versus insured value, not about whether the bike has any worth left. It usually still does.

What Paperwork You Need

Bring the same basics you would for a car: your ID and the bike’s registration if you have it. Missing the registration isn’t automatically a dealbreaker — we carry bill-of-sale paperwork and can usually still work with you. As with any vehicle sale in BC, it’s worth letting ICBC know once the bike has changed hands so it’s no longer tied to your name. See our full breakdown of what paperwork you need to scrap a vehicle in BC for the complete picture — the requirements are the same regardless of how many wheels it has.

How Pickup Actually Works

A motorcycle doesn’t need a full flatbed, so pickup is usually quicker to arrange than for a car. Our driver comes to you with a trailer, confirms the bike matches what you described on the phone, pays you in cash, and loads it up. Same as with cars, towing is always free anywhere in our Lower Mainland service area, and there’s no cost to you regardless of the bike’s condition.

Common Motorcycle Scrap Questions

Does the motorcycle need to be registered in my name?
Ideally yes, since it makes the paperwork faster, but it’s not a strict requirement. If you inherited a bike or bought one without finishing the transfer, tell us on the phone and we’ll walk you through it.

What if the motorcycle has no engine, or is just a frame and parts?
Still worth a call. A stripped-down project bike is a different quote than a complete one, but frames, wheels, and bodywork all still have value in the used-parts market.

Do you take ATVs, dirt bikes, and scooters as well?
Generally yes — if it’s a powered two- or three-wheeled vehicle sitting unused, it’s worth asking. Give us a call with the details and we’ll tell you straight away whether it’s something we can quote.

Is towing really free for a motorcycle pickup?
Yes, exactly like our car pickups — free towing anywhere in our Lower Mainland service area, no exceptions, and payment happens on the spot before it leaves.
